| In hindsight, West Bengal occupied the topmost pedestals of world affairs when Calcutta became the second city of the British Empire, behind London. Now named Kolkata, the city is not less endearing as it was in its erstwhile clout as the capital of British India. Lapped by the waters of the noble Hooghly, otherwise the Ganges in another parlance, Kolkata is the multifaceted gateway to Eastern India.
Notwithstanding the richness of history in Kolkata, a tourist map of West Bengal opens up to more enchanted locations of yore. To wit, there’s the ancient city of Gaur, as well as olden Vishnupur.
West Bengal’s enigmatic communities are also elevated as much as its history is unfathomable. While states in India boast of one or two hill resorts, West Bengal is bedizened with them.
On this serenely heaven-high plane rests Darjeeling, arguably one of the most beautiful hill resorts in the world. |
