For the most part, the southern part of West Bengal is demarcated between the plains of the Ganges and the forests of the Sundarbans. To the north, vegetation gets sparser with increasing elevation.
At its most verdant, the vegetation here has ubiquitous with Sal and other tropical evergreen trees. Higher above the earth, West Bengal becomes a temperate forest.
In turn, the diversity provides harborage for many endemic species of fauna. More than anything, West Bengal is host to the biggest colony of Royal Bengal Tigers, located in the Sundarbans National Park. Apart from the Royal Bengal Tiger, the Sundarbans fosters many other endangered species like the Ganges River Dolphin, river terrapin, estuarine crocodile and so forth.
According to every district map of West Bengal, there are around 19 districts in the state. One can easily blend in the state capital is Kolkata, one of the most populous cities in the world. |
