In the state of Uttaranchal, one should expect to come across a visually arresting town called Almora. With the help of any map of Almora, one can locate this city 5,400 feet high above the earth, in the heights of Kumaon Hills.
There one would see a town in the shape of a horseshoe, lying on a 5-kilometer long mountain range, adjacent to the rivers Kaushik and Shalmali. And bliss, if only for its salubrious climate, Almora is a place to be.
In contrast to other hill stations like Shimla, Nainital and Ranikhet, Almora was single-handedly developed by Indians, not the British. There is a sense of pride here that is quite felt and lived out.
Because of its cultural and political importance as the erstwhile capital of Kumaon, one can still find here a myriad of historical forts, monuments and courts. It is apt of a town that once hosted the descendents from the Katyur dynasty and the Chand dynasty. The legacies are more than imagined.
