At the heart of Tripura is the picturesque capital, Agartala. Very well the overture of Tripura, the place is where the vestiges of a royal dynasty rest. Truth to tell, Agartala is the address of Ujjayanta Palace. It cannot be missed, as its lavish wooden ceilings, beautifully crafted doors and manicured gardens all fight for one’s attention.
Also counted as one of Tripura’s most decadent edifices yet, the Neermahal used to be the summer retreat of the former Maharaj Birbikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. Neermahal, translated as Water Palace, is a feat of human architecture as it stands in the middle of the Rudrasagar Lake.
A state like this also has a lot to flaunt in its antiquated temples. Famous houses of prayer here include Tripura Sundari Temple and Bhubaneshwari Temple, both located at Udaipur. The Hindu creed could not be any more fervent than that evidenced at Unakoti and Pilak, where a Shiva carving stands 30 feet high. |
