Not any map of Bharatpur can quite capture the phenomenon come winter months from October to February when over 350 species of migratory birds from all over the globe congregate in the park to create a visual sanctuary reminiscent of any grand Mecca. Storks, cormorants, egrets, pelicans, ibises, cranes, ducks, geese and the highly endangered Siberian Cranes – the flock is rich!
Visibly the best times in Bharatpur are when the birds show up and the tourists cum bird lovers themselves flock to watch. Bharatpur has been at it, a bird sanctuary since 1956 – and a shooting preserve long before. And do we adore Bharatpur all the more, now being a World Heritage Site and ranked as one of the best waterbirds preserves in the world.
And Bharatpur is bent on keeping it that way. Elsewhere is well and good because Bharatpur has more of the natures’ best to offer: over 29 square kilometer stretch of kadam forests, grasslands and shallow lakes. Of course we do not miss on the temples, too.
