Where wheat is produced by the tons, Punjab is India’s overland entry point. District by district, it is one of the greenest states in India, or so a district map of Punjab says.
Historically, the state is renowned as the land of the Sikhs, whose denomination made up most of India’s armies for centuries.
In fact, the center of Sikhism is in Punjab, particularly in Amritsar. The Harmandir Sahib, more popularly known as the Golden Temple, is located here. The holiest place for the Sikhs, the temple has a gilded dome, for which the temple is named. Interestingly, the Golden Temple is the centerpiece in a large pool of water called the Amrit Sarovar.
Just proximate to the Golden Temple, the Jallaianwala Bagh is a memorial remembering the most notorious massacre under British rule. |
