Elsewhere in India, cities are either modern or superficially old. Cuttack is neither, ancient as this city is. From the 10th century to 1956, it served as Orissa’s capital.
When in Cuttack, the most worthy of one’s rapt attention is the Chandi Temple, dedicated to the patron goddess named Maa Katak Chandi. Unlike other deities, this one is said to still walk among the living at this moment. Another religious spot to be is the Kadam Rasul Mosque.
Through the barrage of antiquities in Cuttack, one may easily set apart the Barabati Fort from the others. It is very well the city’s most beautiful edifice, a genuine 13th century citadel which once hosted a nine-story palace. One of the largest cricket grounds in India, the Barabati Stadium, is hosted here.
Lying somewhere in Cuttack’s countryside is the Ratnagiri Monastery, an erstwhile Buddhist university. Udaigiri and Lalitgiri are also famous for Buddhist monasteries. |
