In the northeastern part of India is the exciting state of Mizoram. As any map of Mizoram would show, the state shares boundaries with Tripura, Assam, Manipur, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Every way deserving of a tourist’s rapt attention, Mizoram is dense with bamboo forests, which are crisscrossed by streams and rivers. In fact, a good one-third of Mizoram is blanketed with vast and frequently uncharted bamboo jungles. Of the 80 million tons of bamboo India produces annually, Mizoram harvests a hefty 40 percent.
Whereas a district map of Mizoram can help one find his or way through the state – or precisely through the bamboos, there is no better tour guide than a Mizo, the native of Mizoram.
Literally, “Mizo” means a “highlander”, but they are far from being hillbillies. Mizos are one of the most civilized in India, if only because they own the record for the second-highest literacy rate in the country. Here, one may wonder if bamboo has anything to do with smartness.
