All somebody has to do nonetheless is bring out a map of Meghalaya and chart those places – all exotic localed -- from Khasi Hills to Jaintia Hills, huge monoliths at Nartiang, Asia’s very own answer to the Stonehenge, to Garo Hills. The latter is steeped in myths and legends, falling back on its caves, some of which are the longest in the subcontinent. Garo Hills is also one of the world’s richest spots in biodiversity.
Journeys starting at Khasi Hills must not overlook Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya. For many Brits who have called it home in days past, Shillong might as well be “Mini London”, what with the several churches like Shillong Cathedral bedizening the city. Other places to be in Shillong are the world-famous Shillong Golf Links and Lady Hydari Park.
In and around Shillong, one comes across comely cascades such as Elephant Falls, Bishop Falls, Spread Eagle Falls, Sweet Falls, Crinoline Falls and Beadon Falls. Also here is the serene Ward's Lake. Rising above it all is the Shillong Peak, from where one can afford a panorama of the mighty Himalayas.
