Hallowed all throughout the world like the emeralds they resemble, hail to the Lakshadweep Islands! -- The ultimate getaway off the subcontinent.
Also called the "Laccadives", the Lakshadweep Islands are located 400 kilometers away from the state of Kerala.
As seen from any location map of Lakshadweep Islands, the islands number around 36, scattered against the limpidness of the Arabian Sea.
Fascinating enough, they are India’s only coralline islands of our country, created by the gradual assimilation of calcium from the water by corals.
Characteristically, every island in the Lakshadweep has a huge, shallow, calm lagoon on one side.
Before we can fully figure that one, a wall-reef made of massive coral boulders and live corals protect it from the swells of the open sea. |

As much as we want to dive headfirst into these snow-white beaches, only two islands are open to us, giddy visitors. Out of the ten inhabited islands, they are Bangaram and Kadmat.
Anyways, the excellence of the islands as a diving location more than compensates. Underneath its depths, a lively marine ecosystem is at play. The lagoons alone at the two islands host spectacles of marine life. Now Lakshadweep is esteemed as the haunt of the eager divers among us.
Aside from diving, snorkeling in the shallow water around Bangaram Island is one of the favorite pastimes, along with windsurfing and kayaking.
