Kerala Idukki Map

We romanced some 120 kilometers of road from Kottayam to discover Idukki, one of India’s loveliest hill resorts.

According to a map of Idukki, this town in Kerala is the provenance of the gracious River Pamba.

Designated after the Malayalam word “Idukki” meaning “a narrow gorge”', the hill station is a very soothing getaway from the blazing scorch of India’s lowlands.

And so we are right about getting some refreshing time.

Before anything, sightseeing around Idukki means paying a visit to Asia's biggest arched dam, the Idukki Dam – a massive structure erected across the noble Periyar River, in the mighty ravine between the Kuravan and Kurathi Hills.

A Guide to Maps of India

Breathtaking at 167 meters, the dam along with the dams at Cheruthony and Kulamavu, creates a wonderful 60 square kilometer-wide artificial lake.  The creation has become to be a beautiful refuge.

Another conspicuous place on the tourist’s itinerary in Idukki is the Wildlife Sanctuary.

But the more famous tiger reserve of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is at nearby Thekkady.

When in Idukki, a side trip to the sanctuary is something of an imperative – some things are made for pictures.

The environs of Idukki are made panoramic by Cheruthani and Moolamattam. From the heights of Cheruthani, visitors can behold vistas of the city of Cochin.

If the affair with Idukki wears off, the nearby hill resort of Peermade is an excellent getaway, as it was the summer retreat of the erstwhile rulers of Travancore.
