Kerala Ernakulam Map

A Guide to Maps of India

And we’re hooked here: Ernakulam boasts one of the finest natural harbors in the world.  For this harbor, it was not long before Kochi grew to become the Queen of the Arabian Sea.  It is all there written in our hand held map of Ernakulam.

The best there is in Kochi is just right here in Ernakulam. Aside from the shopping and leisure destinations, Ernakulam has many sights to behold.  But sure the bargains are by themselves things to behold.

The waterfront of Ernakulam is one place to start.  We look for what lies beneath Eurnakalum’s waterfronts.  Along its length, rows of Chinese fishing nets are stashed for the day, underscoring the centuries-old trade between China and India.

Other than the Chinese, the Dutch were also prominent in Ernakulam’s existence. Without them, the decadent Bolghatty Palace would not have come to being.

Still there are more brainchildren of the Portuguese in Ernakulam. Here they built Pallipuram Fort, Santa Cruz Basilica and the first European church in India, the St. Francis Church.

And so we also learned that Ernakulam also has the distinction of being the site of the oldest Jewish Synagogue in the Common Wealth Countries, at Mattancherry -- circa 1568.

At the end of a day’s breezy trip, we bow down to this thought: The name Ernakulam takes after the Tamil word, Erayanarkulam, meaning abode of Lord Shiva.
