A Guide to Maps of India

While its air still smells with sandalwood and spice, and the breeze feels like silk, the sensual overload that is the forward-thinking state of Karnataka is now into the throes of modernization.

Formerly known as Mysore, Karnataka is at once old and new. According to a district map of Karnataka, the state is a narrow coastal strip by the Arabian Sea at the feet of the Deccan plateau.

Bangalore is the capital, every way a Western metropolis of blossoming gardens, flower-lined avenues and stately buildings.

Elusively the Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore is an industrial and commercial powerhouse reputed for its scientific institutions. When in Bangalore, one has to see old places like the Vidhana Soudha and the Lal Bagh Gardens though.

Notwithstanding its modernity, Karnataka is an antiquity to the hilt. In all, marvelous temples, palaces, and monuments are not the least of Karnataka’s interesting places.

Among temples, Karnataka speaks of the Bull Temple at Bangalore, the Hoyselaswera temple at Halebid and the Krishna temple at Udupi. At the high-flying adored Chamundi Temple, one comes face to face with the famous monolith called the Nandi Bull.

Or else, one may choose to be floored by the sheer spectacle of the Tipu Summer Palace, an inimitably beautiful structure not of gold, but wood. Then the palm-fringed beaches of Mangalore beckon.

One time to visit Karnataka is at the height of the Dussehra festival, when palaces are all aglow in honor of the goddess Chamundeshwari.
