Oft-visited in Belgaum is an oval-shaped fort which holds the famous Kamalabasti.
Inside the structure is a ceiling from which a huge lotus, called Kamala, is suspended. Built in the Chalukyan style, the fort also houses the Safa Mosque.
The fort aside, other great architectural feats in Belgaum include the St. Mary's Church, the Maruthi temple and the Kapileshwar temple.
Despite these unmistakably olden structures, the visitor cannot help but see Belgaum as just another modern town, especially in its cantonment portion.
If this is the case, it helps to take off to Gokak Falls in the city’s environs. Plunging 170 feet below, the cascades have their origin in the river Ghatprabha. |
