Daman and Diu
is situated on the western coast of India. This small union territory
was under the control of Portuguese reign for more than 450 years.
As it was a
union territory, both these places were incorporated into the Republic
Of India in 1961. Daman was formerly known as ‘Damao’.
These
miniature union territories are a combination of cultures thereby
giving various dimensions to the land. Here one can observe a mix of
old coastal as well as the other tribes of India.
The commonly
spoken languages are Gujarati, Marathi and Portuguese. This is a
tourist attraction place. Its serene beaches as well as the bounteous

Diu is regarded as

and Music
The culture of Daman
and Diu is rich and multifaceted. Music and dance play a vital and
significant role in their daily life. A true fusion of cultures such as
urban, tribal, European and Indian can be observed here. This
metaphorical amalgamation is replicated in the traditional Daman
dances. Even today, numerous Portuguese dances are conserved well and
is presented widely. Besides this, the tribal dances with sarcastic
social remarks are an evergreen trend.
Festival
Garba is a folk
dance of the Gujarat state, especially of Diu. This is performed by
women dressed in multicolored costumes and typical ornaments. They
usually sing songs in praise of Goddess. The Navrathri festival is a
significant festival of this region and is celebrated with great pomp
and grandeur. Their mesmerizing music, colorful costumes and their
graceful steps radiate a captivating spell on the viewers.
Another typical
dance is the folk dance festival. This is a Portuguese regional folk
dance of this union territory. The folk dances comprise of Mando Dance,
the Verdigao and the Vira Dance. This portrays the life style of Diu
people and the theme and dance of the song is based on eating,
drinking, singing and being joyous. These dances are done in slow
motions. The elders participate in it and the younger generation also
follows the old traditions. They are culturally rich and preserve their
heritage making it a perfect place for holiday destination.
