Himachal Pradesh Kangra Map

A Guide to Maps of India

After a spiritual journey at Dharamshala, the town of Kangra makes for a worthwhile stopover. In days of yore, one wouldn’t want to miss this town, the erstwhile capital of the Chand dynasty.

With its immense prosperity in the past, invaders could not help but train their eyes on this town, in all its prosperity.

In particular they were intent on pillaging the wealthy Brajeshwari Devi Temple. Nowadays, the Brajeshwari Devi Temple has warped time as Kangra’s everlasting centerpiece.  Its cachet has reached far and wide, even gaining the attention of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Mughal Emperor Akbar.

Notwithstanding the temple, many people are apt to cross paths with Kangra, if only for the quaint location called Masrur.

Situated just 15 km away from Kangra, Masrur is well reputed for its rock-cut temples built in the Shikhara style.

All in all, there are 15 temples in this complex, dating back to the 10th century.

Upon closer scrutiny, one would see similarities between the carvings of these temples and those of the Ellora caves in Maharashtra.

It is inevitable that Kangra should hold a profusion of fauna. In particular, Pong Lake Sanctuary, located around 115 km from Dharamsala, is host to critters like the Sambar, Nilgai, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Clawless Otter, and Leopard.
