Only a city brought up by indulgent Maharajas and British pundits could be grand to the hilt. From a map of Vadodara, one would readily see a city of stately palaces, manicured gardens and prestigious schools.
Once the capital of a princely state, Vadodara is now a flourishing industrial and commercial center.
Visually arresting architecture makes for one's fix in this city. While there are many to reckon with in Vadodara, the most famous palace is the 19th century Laxmi Vilas Palace.
Erected in true Maharaj decadence, the structure is a harmony of arches, domes and towers.
Housed inside are antique chandeliers, fountains, silver trophies, magnificent statues and other royal accoutrements.
The Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum is also situated within the structure, bursting at the seams with artworks acquired by the royal family from Raphael and other celebrated artists.
Other prominent palaces are the Nazarbaugh Palace of the Gaekwas and the Makarpura Palace. |

Another sight not to miss is the Naulakhi Baoli, the “nine million gallon pond”. Otherwise, this is a step well where people can take a bath.
Rolling on invitingly for over a hundred acres is the Garden of Sayaji, the city's leisure space of choice. For sure, the Baroda Museum and Art Gallery, as well as the Nyay Mandir, deserve a visit sometime.
