A look at the map of Guwahati shows that it is eternally hugging the shores of the turbulent Brahmaputra. But explorers are not minding. There are treasure troves waiting.
For one, the market of Guwahati is always on the go and vibrant and well stocked, especially with local crafts -- sand handloom, muga silk, bell metal, canework, woollen shawls and stylish Naga and Manipur jackets.
But one may forego the call of the market noise and go historical, head straight instead to Kamakhya Temple atop Nilachal hill, the most sacred among the tantrik shrines of Shakti worship in the world and perhaps the city’s biggest attraction.
The site commands a majestic view of the city and the river. The lofty setting is nippy and stirring to the soul. |
